Capoeira Art For an Inclusief Wordl 2020

When Capoeira meets the Visual Arts

Our current context of discrimination and oppression in our society, demands to pay attention to the cultural manifestations that liberate us from the colonial mindset. We, as collaborating artists, consider Capoeira as a tool for empowerment.
Through this project we create an experience of empowerment of the soul through the awareness of the body and its energy. This is something facilitated through the mix between Capoeira and visual arts. This project is a collaboration between visual artists Maga Berr, Marie Hodge and Patricia Ribas, and Mestre Sidney Tartaruga. We invite everyone interested in the liberating movement of Capoeira to get involved in our artistic intervention.

The method for creating this experience is inspired in Afro Brazilian cultural manifestations where there is an intersection between the spiritual, the body and the visual. Where the word Axe means light or spirit and Capoeira is an art that managed to empower ex-slaves from Brazil to escape slavery.
The project counts with the participation of Mestre Sidney Tartaruga, who will specially come from Rio de Janeiro for this project. It will be a unique opportunity to learn from his experience and techniques. He will facilitate Capoeira workshops from September 25 till December 5, at Lola Bae in Amsterdam. Project kick off: 25 September.
Mestre Tartaruga uses the body language and movements of the Capoeira Regional school, and the elements and foundations of Capoeira Angola, which is the original style practiced by slaves. Angola style is characterized by being slower, composed of stealthy movements. Focus in his teaching is on empowering the body, by creating flexibility and balance, strengthening through dance movements, using the sounds and rhythms of Brazilian Popular Culture. The movement of Ginga, attacks, defences, imbalances, and introduction to Capoeira instruments and rhythms are part of his training.
Also there will be space to organise public debates in relation to the thematic of social inclusion and exclusion, the role of Visual Arts and the role of Capoeira in this. There will also be master classes around the history of Capoeira and its role in the empowerment of ex-slaves in Brazil during their struggle against slavery. Public debates and master classes will be open to the wide public.
At the end of the project we will have a Final Festival taking place on 4-6 December. It will include an art exhibition showing the produced works, process, developments of the project. The festival will count with shows about Afro Brazilian music and dances, film screenings related to the culture and history of Capoeira, public conversations about the role of this art as an instrument of inclusion, performances, food and market.
At the end of October (30 october- 2 November) comes an excursion to Capoeira Liberdade nucleus in Warsaw-Poland. There we will participate of diverse activities and events, meet the multicultural atmosphere and experience Capoeira as a world in itself. The excursion is of course optional, and will only be available for Capoeira students of the project.

So join this project, if you are prepared to strengthen your mind, body and creativity in a liberating way! Also if you are interested in learning the values behind Capoeira and its important role to create a better society. We will be very happy to welcome you.
