MESTRE TARTARUGA: Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Mestre Tartaruga, Brazilian, lives in the Favela Morro do Cantagalo in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, south of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Son of the composer of sambas enredos and Partido Alto, Joel Silva. He always had art within his family nucleus. In 1982, he started attending capoeira workshops at a summer camp for children in a situation of social vulnerability, immediately identifying himself with the playful and inclusive way that the art of capoeira provided for its regulars. Formed at Associação Capoeira Liberdade, Mestre Tartaruga has been coordinating the LIBERDADE PROJECT for 25 years, which is developed at the same community space. Founding member of the Museu de Favela (Favela Museum), which enjoys recognition in the artistic and cultural environment of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
